Easter holidays are just about here. And if the annual family roadtrip to the coast hasn’t materialised this year, you’re probably pondering what to do, besides the everyday mundane, that the whole family will enjoy? We’ve got you covered with some great ideas for adventurous activities that will get everyone off the couch and out and about to enjoy the last days of summer this holiday season.

Go on a treasure hunt
Naturally you can organise your own Easter egg treasure hunt at home. But there are also great events taking place around the country over Easter that takes the planning off your hands and have activities to keep kids and adults entertained. Check out these popular treasure hunts in Cape Town and Joburg for example.

Take a train trip
Experience the beautiful scenery of SA’s rural landscape and take the family on a train trip for some old-school adventure. The Holiday Express is offering day trips from Durban Station to either Scottburgh or the Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market over the Easter holidays. Or contact your local railway operator to find out about available day trips in your area.

Do your local parkrun
These 5 km runs take place across the country every weekend and have a real family feel, being suitable for people of all ages and running ability. It’s a great way to explore your local surrounds, meet the community, and get the heart pumping while having some outdoor fun.

Visit the zoo
Not all of us can experience the adventure of a real bush safari this holiday, but the next best thing is to head to your nearest zoo and get up close and personal with our incredible wildlife. Or maybe your crew will fancy a trip to the aquarium, or Snake Park, or bird sanctuary – let your imagination take flight and explore nature as a family.

Go horse riding
Another fantastic instant getaway in the great outdoors that both young and old will love. Besides the fact that horse riding is great exercise, it has been proven to be very effective in relieving stress (for mom and dad) and instilling confidence in kids. And can you imagine a better view of the countryside than from horseback?

Adventure = fun and great memories. And we can all benefit from the occasional leap out of our comfort zone and regular routine, right? Adventure needn’t be epic travels or extreme sports only, just think outside the box and have yourself an adventure from home this Easter.
